A Much-Needed Vacation in Cabo

I am looking at my suitcase.  It is on my bedroom floor.  I am trying to remember not to pack too heavily as there is a weight limit for luggage on this flight to our vacation in Cabo.  There are pine needles on the floor beside my luggage reminding me we are in the Christmas season but the big day is over and now we are heading into the New Year.  Ten of us are heading to Cabo for a much-needed break from the taxing year that has gone by.  Last year I was packing for a similar trip with Robert and the family.  We were laughing and chatting over Bob’s colourful shirt and tie collection.  He always looked amazing with his pink shirts and aqua ties.  This year there is only one suitcase on the bedroom floor.  Robert is gone.   My heart still aches.  This will be the first Christmas vacation I have taken without him in 10 years. Nothing I put in my suitcase will help me get through the hurt.  I miss him terribly.
As I drop my gym shoes into my suitcase I remind myself this break is much needed.  I have been in high gear since learning of Bob’s cancer.  There has been no time to grieve for him and I feel myself beginning to boil over with emotion.  I have given this some thought however and am going to do something while in Mexico that we always did whenever Bob and I were on vacation.  We would spend one night “dining in” dressed in our bathrobes looking at a glorious sunset, drinking wine and eating only bread and cheese.  The simplicity of such an evening was always so memorable for me.  I will do it again this year, for him and for myself.  I will also go down to the beach in the evening and bury a small token of us as a couple in the Mexican sand.  This year it will be a copy of MuscleMag with him on the cover in his final tribute.
My suitcase is getting full and I can hear the family in the hall, voices buzzing with excitement.  It hurts to stand still and it hurts to move on, but move on I must.
I’ll be back again in January to start up a new year with all of you. It will be a happy, healing year.

Day 25 of Giving: Our Final Day of Giving – Merry Christmas

We’re a little behind schedule here for our final day of Giving, but, nevertheless, here is the final Give of 2012.

With warmth in our hearts, my daughters, my mother and I sat around the Christmas tree this morning opening some very special gifts, many of which brought Robert into our hearts and minds for our first Christmas Day without him.

We took our lovely dogs for a walk through the woods and enjoyed the cool crisp air in the Caledon hills.

And now we are cuddled around the fireplace with family and friends waiting for the turkey to cook – because I misread the weight of the turkey and thought is was 8lbs instead of 8kg – oops! Great excuse to play games, though.

It has been a trying year, but we’ve managed to make it through the difficult times by keeping Robert’s memory alive in all that we do.

And that is my final Give for you today…

Time, memories, love, and peace.

We are all dealt difficult times, but we are strong and healthy and able to both give and receive love.

Merry Christmas from my family to yours.

Day 24 of Giving: My Favorite Charcuterie Appetizer

Okay everyone – this is definitely my treat meal of choice!

My favorite appetizer to have around the house during the holidays is charcuterie.

It’s tasty and satisfying and definitely a treat!

My friends at Seed to Sausage helped me put together this great board complete with Prosciutto, Lonzino, Salumi, and Capicola.

2012-12-11 19.21.42

Other ways to spice up the board include adding your favorite cheeses (I love getting a local variety from Cooke’s Fine Foods), the crustiest bread (I stock up from Pan Chancho bakery), and adding tasty olives on the side.

How do you spice up your charcuterie board?

Don’t forget to pair your Clean Charcuterie board with delicious red wines and Clean Cocktails.

Here are a couple of Clean Cocktail options from me and couple of my favorite Eating Clean ladies:

White Peach & Black Cherry Bellissimo from The Eat-Clean Diet Cookbook 2.

The Best  from Zain Jamal.

Mango Jalapeno Mar-Margarita by  Dani Spies.

Day 23 of Giving: Beat Holiday Bloat

This post from my daughter, Rachel (The Traveling Naturopath) and Eat-Clean Diet Ambassador, Maryska, is very timely considering heavy holiday meals are just around the corner. Beat the holiday bloat with their easy and awesome suggestions.

Ugh! The holidays. The heaviness. The food comas. The bloat! Do you know what we mean?

You just wind up feeling gross.

So Maryska Taylor and I (The Traveling ND) are here to help you beat the holiday bloat. We’re naturopathic-doctors-in-training, which means digestive support is a big part of what we do.

Handling the holidays is simple with a few tools in your eat-well arsenal:

Before the Meal: Gentiana lutea is an excellent bitter herb that can help with digestion. Using it 15-20 minutes before your meal will stimulate your natural digestive juices so you are able to better digest your foods.

During the Meal: Simple food hygiene works wonders. Be sure you are sitting down to eat your meal. Chew your food thoroughly by using a technique called Fletcherizing – chew each bite 30 times before you swallow. Keep fluids out of your meal – this can dilute your stomach acid. And be sure to take your time to eat your meal while enjoying the company of your loved ones.

After the Meal: If you do feel a bit bloated and uncomfortable after your meal, carminative teas are your best bet. Carminatives herbs provide soothing, anti-spasm, anti-bloat effects on the gut. Try a combination of peppermint, chamomile and licorice tea. And, if you’re feeling a bit nauseas, throw in a slice of fresh ginger, too.

Of course, this isn’t a be-all, end-all guide for all, and we suggest that you visit your local naturopathic doctor to help with any persistent gut issues you are having.

Day 22 of Giving: What Can YOU Donate? Danzig Kids Donation

Here’s a letter I received the other day from the Danzig Kids Come First organization. They are aiding the families affected by the Danzig neighbourhood mass shooting in Toronto in July of this past summer. I was happy to donate to their cause and help these families out in some small way. I encourage you to consider ways you can donate in your local community. Perhaps now would be an excellent time to give back to the Newtown community as well. It doesn’t necessarily have to be “things” either – time is just as valuable especially during the holiday season.

Dear Tosca,

Once again thank you and, Robert Kennedy Publishing, for the generous donation of 100 copies of the Eat-Clean Diet for Families and Kids book for Danzig families.

In early August following the Danzig tragedy of July 16, 2012, some Danzig moms began organizing a Peace Walk in the Danzig neighbourhood. Other local residents also joined in. We were remembering and also  trying to raise our concerns about  the lack of hope and peace.  Hope and peace missing, in the lives of children, because of stigmatization, poverty, fear and the feeling of  hopelessness in Danzig and other similar high risk communities nearby.

Education is very important in the challenge of changing attitudes, cultural divides when dealing with the complexities, the whys and the consequences of violence, despair, broken homes, lives  and hearts.

Education is also very important in the health and well-being of our children. DKCF has decided to try and find ways to educate moms and other family members about healthy lifestyle choices for their children and other family members. Hence our request for this wonderful educational book.

The books donated to Danzig were wrapped in “green” good for the environment wrappings. Not a bit of scotch tape was used in the process. Good old fashioned, economical, fun ways of doing things were taught as books were wrapped. Library users also dropped in to help.

The books will be delivered quietly and anonymously to every Danzig home on Christmas Eve by the Danzig moms in the pictures I sent separately this morning.

Christmas morning will bring a delightful, educational and unexpected family surprise for Danzig children and parents.

The challenging work of Danzig Kids Come First has resulted in a major repair blitz to Danzig homes, playground equipment for the little ones and a concrete ping pong table for older children and their parents will probably be installed in the spring.

All because Danzig moms decided that deeds are more important that words.  We have been successful because we refuse to give up. More importantly, though, without the kindness and generosity of individuals and companies helping us when we asked for help, we would have accomplished very little.

Companies like Robert Kennedy Publishing and, so many other benefactors are helping Danzig Kids Come First moms organize, fundraise, raise awareness and even get long overdue repairs made to homes in Danzig. It is our hope that future funds raised by DKCF will also be used to benefit other nearby high risk, poor Toronto Housing Corporation communities in our area.

Our Facebook site is being updated and will be finished on Dec 21st. It is called Danzig Kids Come First.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone, at Robert Kennedy Publishing, happiness, good health, hope and peace during this special time of the year and throughout 2013.

With appreciation,

Brenda Mignardi, President
Melissa Warren Paul, Vice President
Jennifer Clark, Secretary/Treasurer
Patty Haley, Community Liaison, TDSB
